Learn More about Blackout Shades

Start with the Light That Actually Reaches the Room

There is no single darkness level that suits every sleeper. A bedroom is sufficiently dark when streetlights, headlights, early-morning sun, and other light sources are no longer visually distracting to the person using it. Check the room after your eyes have adjusted, then note whether light is entering through the fabric, around the sides, above the headrail, beneath the shade, or from other sources in the room.

For night-shift workers, evaluate the window during the brightest part of the intended sleep period rather than only at night. In a nursery, convenient controls can make it easier to darken the room for naps and reopen the shade for daytime checks. Motorized schedules or saved positions may help with these routines when supported by the selected configuration. Learn more about how unwanted light affects a sleep environment.

Match the Treatment Format to the Window and Routine

Choose the treatment form before comparing colors. Motorized Blackout Roller Shades | Fabric Series create a compact, minimal profile for standard windows. Motorized Blackout Cellular Shades add a honeycomb structure that can support thermal comfort. Roman shades introduce softer folds, while custom curtains provide broader wall coverage and can be layered over a shade. Panel systems are generally more practical for wide windows and sliding doors that require side-to-side movement.

Fabric color alone does not determine light blocking. A lighter-colored fabric with an opaque backing may block light through the material as effectively as a darker option. Construction, opacity, edge coverage, and fit matter more. Use blackout roller fabric swatches to compare color and texture in the room, but assess the complete installation separately.

Treat Hotel-Style Darkness as a Coverage System

Opaque fabric controls light through the material; mounting and edge coverage determine how much light remains around it. Inside-mounted treatments require operating clearance and therefore commonly leave narrow side gaps. An outside mount can overlap the opening and often provides deeper coverage when sufficient wall or trim space is available.

Review the inside- versus outside-mount guide, then follow the Measuring Guide for Blinds & Shades before ordering. Where compatible, side channels or light-blocking strips can reduce edge leakage. Layered curtains can address additional light paths. Hotel-style darkness usually comes from opaque material, generous overlap, well-planned edge coverage, and accurate installation working together—not from the fabric label alone.
