Collection: Outdoor Shades

Outdoor shades can be used where there is a suitable, secure mounting surface and a clear path for the fabric and bottom rail. Common locations include covered patios, porches, decks, balconies, pergolas, and exterior window openings. The structure, exposure, clearance, and mounting hardware should be checked before ordering.

Openness describes how much of the fabric is open weave. Lower percentages provide stronger sun control and privacy with less view, while higher percentages preserve more visibility and airflow but allow more light and heat through.

A lower openness percentage indicates a denser solar-screen weave. A 1% fabric generally provides stronger shade and daytime coverage with less outward visibility. A 3% fabric offers a middle balance, while 5% openness preserves more view and daylight but allows more sunlight through. Compare samples under the lighting conditions where the shade will be installed.

Choose 1% for stronger glare, heat, and daytime privacy control; 3% for a balanced mix of protection and view; and 5% when preserving the outside view matters most. Darker colors often improve outward visibility, while lighter colors can feel brighter and reflect more visible light.

Outdoor solar shades can reduce visibility from the brighter side while retaining some outward view during the day. This is not dependable nighttime privacy: when lighting behind the shade is brighter than the exterior, people outside may be able to see through the fabric. Lower openness provides greater coverage but also reduces the view.

Outdoor shades use materials and components intended for greater exterior exposure and intercept sunlight before it reaches the covered space or window glass. Indoor solar shades are protected from outdoor weather and are installed inside the building. Product-specific materials and exposure limits should always be confirmed before installation.

Some outdoor shade fabrics and components are designed to resist ordinary exterior exposure, but this does not make the complete shade stormproof or suitable for every weather condition. Water can also collect around hardware or remain in rolled fabric. Follow the product’s care and weather instructions, and allow wet material to dry completely before prolonged retraction.

Outdoor shades may tolerate normal movement and ordinary outdoor conditions when correctly installed, but wind can place substantial force on lowered fabric. Side-retention or guide systems may improve stability when included in the selected configuration, but they do not turn the shade into storm protection. Raise the shade during severe wind and follow the product’s stated operating limits.

Measure the opening at multiple points and confirm the flat mounting area, bracket clearance, cassette space, bottom-rail position, nearby obstructions, and full shade path. Regularly remove leaves, pollen, dust, and loose debris with a soft brush or cloth. Outdoor mesh may be gently rinsed with low-pressure water when permitted by the product instructions. Avoid harsh chemicals, high-pressure washing, and abrasive scrubbing, and let the shade dry completely before rolling it up.
