Measuring Guide for Curtains & Drapes
What You’ll Need Before Measuring
To ensure accurate measurements and a smooth ordering process, we recommend preparing the following tools:
- Steel tape measure — do not use cloth tape
- Pencil
- Measurements may be rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch.
Step 1: Measure the Width(Determine Rod/Track Length and Placement)
Start by deciding where the curtain rod will be placed in relation to your window.
- Height Above the Window Frame
Curtain rods are typically installed 6–10 inches above the window frame to create the illusion of a taller window. - Extend the Rod Beyond the Window Frame
Extend the rod 6–15 inches on each side of the window to allow space for the curtain stack when open. - Measure and enter the desired curtain coverage width only
For curtain rods with finials, allow 4" clearance on each end (8" total) for the finials and exclude this space from your measurement. For tracks, no deduction is needed—the coverage width is typically the same as the track length.
Lightly mark your placement using a pencil or masking tape before installation.
*Width measurements may be rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch.
If you want the window to be fully exposed when the curtain is open, please add extra 1/3 of the width. Additional width may be needed for heavy or bulky fabrics.

Step 2: Find Your Perfect Curtain Drop
Because your curtains are custom-made, you can choose exactly how they fall at the floor.
Start by:
Measure the distance from your curtain rod to the floor, then select your preferred style:
- Sill: measures to the window sill; typically used on an inside mount
- Apron: measures to the bottom of the window apron; typically used on an outside mount
- Float (0.5"–1" above floor): measures approximately ½" above the floor; keeps curtains slightly off the floor for a clean and practical finish
- Slight Break (1"–2" extra height): measures to the floor; adds a relaxed feel with minimal fabric pooling
- Puddle (6"–10" extra height): measures to the floor; creates a decorative, layered appearance
Step 3: Calculate Your Final Curtain Size
Now that you’ve measured your windows and selected your preferences, it’s time to calculate your final curtain size.
The width follows your rod or track measurement. With Graywind’s 2× (200%) default fullness already built in, the fabric is proportioned to achieve a balanced, well-structured look without the need for further adjustment.
The height is guided by your rod-to-floor measurement, with subtle refinements depending on how you would like the curtains to fall. A more tailored finish will follow your exact measurement, while a softer look introduces a slight extension to create movement and depth at the floor.
If you’re unsure, a float finish offers a clean and versatile result that works naturally across most interiors.
Notes
- Your custom drapery will be made to the exact width and length you provide.
- Use a steel tape measure and width measurements may be rounded to the nearest whole inch, while height should be rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch for the most accurate finished look.
- Measure each window or opening individually.
- This guide covers common scenarios, but may not apply to every situation.

Why Graywind Choose 2× Fullness
Fullness determines how rich and structured your curtains will look when closed. At Graywind, we use a default 2× (200%) fullness for all drapery styles. This means the total fabric width is twice the rod or track width, creating a balanced, well-proportioned appearance.
Why 2× Fullness?
- Prevents a flat, lackluster look
- Creates consistent, elegant folds
- Works across most interior styles—from modern to classic
- Delivers a “just right” level of volume without excess bulk s
By Header Style
- Pleated Styles: 2× fullness is built into the construction for a structured, tailored look
- Grommet Styles: Designed to perform best at 2× fullness, providing natural, even waves
We select 2× fullness for the best visual balance and overall finish.
