What's Roman Shade
Roman Shades are fabric window treatments that raise into a series of soft folds and unfold into a smooth, tailored panel when lowered. They combine the warmth and decorative appeal of curtains with the compact profile and practical light control of shades.
What to Consider
This guide walks you through the key decisions—from comparing Roman Shade styles and fabrics to measuring, mounting, operating and maintaining your shades—so you can choose the right option for your windows and everyday needs.
Fabric Options
Fabric influences how a Roman Shade folds, filters light and complements the room. Consider the light-control level and maintenance requirements of each material before making your selection.
Both Premium and Essential fabrics are available in Light Filtering to soften daylight or Blackout for greater light blocking.
Premium Fabrics
Explore soft textures, rich weaves and decorative finishes for a more layered look. This collection is suited to spaces where fabric texture and drape are an important part of the design.
Essential Fabrics
Explore fabrics with a more structured feel, from subtle woven textures to decorative patterns. This collection offers a tailored finish for a variety of interiors.
Inside and Outside Mount
Your mounting type affects the finished appearance, light coverage and amount of visible glass.
Before ordering, check the available depth and make sure handles, locks and other hardware will not interfere with the shade. Refer to our Measuring Guide and Install Guide for complete instructions.
Inside Mount
Fits within the window opening for a clean, built-in appearance that keeps the surrounding trim visible. Because the fabric sits inside the frame, small light gaps may remain along both sides.
Requires a window frame with sufficient depth (at least 1 7/8 inches) for shades to fit in.
Outside Mount
Fits above or around the window opening for broader coverage. It can be a useful choice when the recess is too shallow or you prefer to cover the trim.
With sufficient overlap, an outside mount can help reduce light entering around the edges.
Stack Height
Stack height is the space the folded fabric occupies when the Roman Shade is fully raised. Depending on the shade size, fabric and fold style, it typically measures around 13 inches. Before choosing your mounting position, check whether the raised shade will cover the upper glass or interfere with the way the window opens.
Control Types
Roman Shades are available with several operating systems, including continuous-loop, cordless and motorized controls. Graywind focuses on effortless motorization with convenient everyday operation.
Raise, lower and position your Motorized Roman Shades with a remote or the Graywind App. Selected configurations also support grouping, schedules, voice control and remote access through compatible smart-home platforms. Best for tall or hard-to-reach windows, multiple shades, family-friendly cordless operation and everyday smart-home convenience.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Use a vacuum on low suction with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from the surface and folds.
Premium Fabric Roman Shades feature a removable fabric panel for easier, more thorough care. Always follow the instructions for your selected material and keep all motorized components dry.
The Art of Layering
Pair Roman shades with flowing curtains to add depth, texture and a designer look. This pairing enhances light control, insulation and style—perfect for creating a warm, inviting space.
