Use a Designer’s Three-Light Swatch Test

Evaluate every finalist in three conditions: direct daylight, indirect daylight, and evening artificial light. Hold the sample vertically at the window rather than flat on a table. Backlighting can reveal undertones, weave density, and apparent opacity that are not visible on a screen.

Then place the swatch beside the trim, wall paint, flooring, and largest upholstered surface in the room. Photograph the options from the normal viewing distance and label each image. This simple process makes comparisons more objective and prevents a small color difference from becoming a room-wide mismatch after a custom order is produced.

Compare Opacity and Texture Before Color

Begin with function. Compare blackout and light-filtering roller samples at the actual window; compare cellular material for its folded structure; compare Roman and curtain fabrics for drape, softness, and decorative presence. Once the right material family is clear, narrow the palette.

A smooth pale fabric may feel crisp and architectural, while a slub, jacquard, or natural-looking weave adds depth. Darker colors can increase visual contrast around the opening. The best sample is not always the most striking one in hand—it is the one that supports the room, the light, and the neighboring windows when seen at full scale.

Build a Swatch Shortlist for a Whole-Home Project

For several rooms, select one anchor neutral and no more than two supporting directions. Use the anchor in connected spaces, then vary texture or opacity according to each room’s needs. Keep separate notes for product family, fabric code, color, opacity, and intended room so similar names do not become confused.

Graywind offers swatch booklets across roller, cellular, Roman, zebra, Shangrila, vertical, panel track, curtain, outdoor, and Motionblinds families. Test the exact family you intend to order; a color name shared across categories should not be assumed to look identical in a different material or weave.
